About 375 miles off of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, this island was given a status of "Patrimony of the Humanity" given its unique qualities and abundance of marine life. Not only the marine life is superb, but conditions on the island are unique in the sense that it can support a tropical rain forest. There is no airstrip and the only access is through boat, but the 32-38 hour voyage is definitely worth the reward you will encounter.

Its secluded location, far away from civilization, has provided the island with a safe environment which has given way to the evolution of a great number of endemic species. This has made the island a one of a kind laboratory for scientists studying evolutionary biology.

This island has been used by sailors throughout time, as a provision stop due to its fresh water streams and waterfalls, and as some might tell you, a place to bury treasures as well.  If you decide to spend time on the island, you will be able to hike and explore this ancient pirate hub and even see century old inscriptions on rocks.
